Posture and Emotions: a powerful connection

Humans are emotional beings. We live our lives expressively through the internal and external emotions that flow through us. Some of us are morning people and are full of energy at 6am. Our partners however, may be reluctant to face the day , show signs of withdrawal and express their early morning feelings by hanging their heads low or not smiling much (…until they have their cup of coffee, that is!).

Our emotions and our posture are interlinked

We develop certain emotional states that we move into and out of easily. Our body posture reflects these feelings when we walk, sit and move. If you are confident, happy and emotionally balanced, you will more naturally, stand straight and look tall. If you are under the weather, you will more naturally slouch, round out your shoulders, hunch and let your head fall forward. Our posture adopts and adapts to certain positions out of habits, past injury and repetitive overuse movements.

Can posture be corrected? Of course, it can.

Postural correction has substantial health and emotional benefits

Correcting your posture has many benefits from increased energy to increased attraction, not only to others but yourself too. It changes the way you feel about yourself and gives you an expansive new outlook. The positive emotional aspect of posture translates into an improved physiology where hormones and circulation and positive energy flow through your body. You will relate to the world and the people you work and live with in a more positive way, more friendly, more engaging, more trusting, more loving and more patient.

Awareness, postural correction and change of habits

When you start the journey of correcting your physical posture, we recommend you start with postural awareness and then move on to foundational flexibility exercises to lengthen the short, tight and restricted soft tissues.

Once your posture is more balanced, you will want to hold it in this new position and then stabilise the long, weak muscles especially those in the posterior chain. Manual therapy of the soft tissue will help remove trigger points and relieve localised areas of pain. You will want to work with multi planar movement patterns to teach the nervous system and neuromuscular system new ways to move and behave in order to maintain the proper alignment.
